Baptized Catholics who reached the age of reason are eligible to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Second graders attending our Catholic School or enrolled in our second grade CCD class will be prepared to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Parents should be involved in their child's preparation by reviewing with their children what they are learning.
Parents along with their children are required to attend a orientation meeting with the pastor and teachers for First Reconciliation and First Communion. Meetings will be scheduled several weeks before the reception of the Sacrament. A short review of the sacrament being received will be given, followed by instructions for the day of the celebration of the Sacrament.
Parents are the primary teachers of their children and are encouraged to be involved in their children's preparation for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Part of that involvement is the obligation we have as Catholics to attend Mass on Sundays (or Saturday evening) and holy days of obligation. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church "the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own pastor. Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin (CCC 2181)."
