What is the Sacrament of Reconciliation?
The Sacrament of Reconciliation is a sacrament which provides spiritual healing for souls wounded by sin. Through the Sacrament of Reconciliation sinners are reconciled with God and the Church, grace & strength is given to help avoid sin in the future. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is an opportunity for us to express sorrow, to ask for forgiveness, and to seek spiritual direction. If approached with a sorrowful heart, the Sacrament of Reconciliation is often followed by a certain feeling of peace and calmness.
Why confess our sins?
It is good for us, from time to time, to voice our sinfulness. Sometimes we may feel bad (or guilty) and not sure about what God (our Father) thinks about. A priest is a voice speaking for Jesus Christ (our mediator to the Father). A priest shows the compassion, gentleness and understanding of Jesus Christ. A priest gives words of encouragement and words of advice -- words to strengthen the penitent. Sometimes it is good to hear a compassionate “human” voice, telling you of our Father’s mercy and forgiveness.
