Baptized Catholics who reached the age of reason are eligible to receive the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Second graders attending our Catholic School or enrolled in our second grade CCD class will be prepared to receive the Sacrament. Since parents have the primary responsibility for the education of their children, they should be involved in their child's preparation by reviewing with their child what they are learning.
Children should be attending Sunday Liturgy with their parents. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church "the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own pastor. Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin (CCC 2181)."
Parents along with their children are required to attend a orientation meeting with the pastor and teachers for First Communion. Meetings will be scheduled several weeks before the reception of the Sacrament. A short review of the sacrament being received will be given, followed by instructions for the day of the celebration of the Sacrament.
